Colorado Breweries Win 19 Medals At U.S. Open Beer Championship

The U.S. Open Beer Championship took place this past weekend and Colorado breweries brought home a total of 19 medals. This international competition accepted more than 4000 beers from more than 20 countries across the globe, including submissions from both professional breweries and award-winning home-brewers.

Ballast Point Brewing of San Diego, California was named the Grand National Champion. They won three gold medals for their Ballast Point Pale Ale, Calico Amber Ale, and Sculpin IPA, and one silver medal for their Black Marlin.

AC Golden Brewing Company of Golden received the highest honors for our state breweries. They placed 9th overall, winning gold medals for their Hidden Barrel Kriek and Barmen Pilsner, plus a silver medal for their Colorado Native IPL.

Other Colorado breweries who were awarded medals in the U.S. Open Beer Championship are:

  • New Belgium Brewing won a total of 4 medals. They won gold in the American specialty wheat category for their Snapshot Wheat. They were also awarded a trio of bronze medals: one for Abbey in the Belgian dubbel category, one for Blue Paddle in the American lager/pilsner category, and one for Slow Ride in the session beer category
  • Verboten Brewing won two medals: a bronze for their Pure Imagination in the oatmeal stout category, as well as a silver in the gose category for Roll in Ze’ Hay
  • Liquid Mechanics Brewing Co won two bronze medals: one for their Kolsch in the German Kolsch category, and one for their Imperial Porter in the American imperial porter category
  • Aspen Brewing Company’s Belgian Farmhouse Saison won gold in French/Belgian Saison category
  • Bootstrap Brewing’s Flagstaff Amber won gold in the American amber/red category
  • Boulder Beer’s Shake Chocolate Porter won silver in the chocolate/cocoa beer category
  • City Star Brewing’s Harley’s Honey Wheat won bronze in the American Dark Wheat category
  • Denver Beer Co’s Sun Drenched won gold in the sessions beer category
  • Elevation Beer Co’s Apis IV won gold in the Belgian quadruple category
  • Liquid Mechanics Brewing Co won two bronze medals: one for their Kolsch in the German Kolsch category, and one for their Imperial Porter in the American imperial porter category
  • Oskar Blues Brewery won a gold medal in the imperial red ale category for their G’Knight Imperial Red Ale
  • WeldWerks Brewing’s Hefeweizen won a silver in the American specialty wheat category

This year the U.S. Open Beer Championship also gave e a “Judges Award” for the top ten beers with the most creative names. Among the ten, Colorado’s own Living the Dream Brewing Co came in #4 for The Eternal Hoptomist.
