The 2019 Collaboration Fest is coming to Denver on March 16! This is the 6th year of this festival, celebrating Colorado craft beer and their camaraderie with each other, and brewers near and far. More than 200 craft breweries are making new collaboration beers for this event, including all five of our local neighborhood Castle Rock

Castle Rock Collaboration Beer
Brewing of the Castle Rock brewery collaboration happened at Burly Brewing Company, under the watchful eye of Burly’s head brewer Jim Stinson. All four of the other Castle Rock breweries (Rockyard Brewing Company, 105 West Brewing Company, Iron Mule Brewing & Wild Blue Yonder Brewing) were on hand. According to Jim, this beer was a real collaborative effort, with each brewery bringing ideas to the table and ingredients to the brew kettle. Fittingly, our Castle Rockers decided to make a steinbier.

Steinbier, which means “stone beer” in German, was developed centuries ago by German farmers, long before large metal brew kettles were readily available. Stones were superheated over the fire and dropped in the mash tun to heat the mash, and later, to boil the wort. These hot rocks work to caramelize the sugars in the wort instantly, giving the beer a unique flavor.

Obviously, Burly Brewing Company has a more advanced setup than your typical German farmer from days of yore. This collab beer was made the new-fashioned way, and hot rocks were added at the end of the boil to caramelize the wort. Sadly, we couldn’t stick around long enough to watch the hot stone action. Fortunately for us, 105 West brewer Kjell Wygant provided a few photos so we could see what we missed.

Our thanks to Burly Brewing and the entire group of Castle Rock brewers for letting us spend some time with you on your collaboration brew day. We cannot wait to taste the beer at Collaboration Fest!
